Direct flight to San Francisco sought

JALANDHAR (TNN | Sep 21, 2015, 03.17 PM IST ) : Ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to California scheduled for last week of September, the North American Punjabi Association (NAPA) has sought direct flights between San Francisco and Amritsar.

“More than six lakh Punjabis live in and around California and they have been demanding direct flights to Amritsar since long. Not only will it come as a big relief to passengers bound for Amritsar, but will also attract an equal number Punjabi population residing in the adjoining Canadian state of British Columbia,” said NAPA executive director Satnam Singh Chahal.

He added that in the absence of direct flights between San Francisco and Amritsar, Punjabis have been facing great inconvenience.

A delegation of NAPA representatives had earlier met Councillor General of India (CGI) Venkatesan Ashok in July last and they were given assurance that a final decision for direct flights between San Francisco or San House and Amritsar would soon be taken. tnn

“It would like connecting the NRI hub of Punjab – Doaba and Majha regions – with Punjabi populated areas of US and Canada,” he said.

Meanwhile Chahal said that most of the passengers in flights of US, Canada, England , Italy to Delhi are Punjabis and they have to wait for hours together for the connecting flight to Amritsar. “The direct flights can be profitable also,” he said adding that this would also help to further promote Amritsar airport as an international airport.
